Notes

According to Robert Tanguy: "When I was about 12, I came home from school one afternoon to find Mum crying. It was around Christmastime, and when I asked what was the matter, she said, "I got a Christmas card from my brother." Now, this did not seem like such a catastrophe to me, and I said so. Then I got the story. It seems when Grandma and Grandpa Baker's estates were settled, there were some misunderstandings and some unpleasant remarks about Uncle Earl, who was the executor. Consequently, he just left, and no one had heard from him for about 15 years. Mum was so happy to have that Christmas card. He and Aunt Nell were living in Cleveland, Ohio, at the time, and I remember writing to Aunt Nell, who was a nurse, to tell her that our schools were closed, because one of my classmates had poliomyelitis. I was taking typing lessons at school at the time, and I typed the letter on our old Remington typewriter. I was so proud of my typing skills (even though there were a lot of mistakes) and that I
could spell poliomyelitis.

"Mum and I visited Aunt Nell and Uncle Earl several times, taking the Erie Railroad to Cleveland from Greenville. After we were married, Rose and I also visited. Two things attracted me in their apartment -- well, really three. It was the first security building I had ever seen. You stepped into a little foyer and pressed a button next to their name. They would answer by intercom, and when you told them who you were, they would press a button to unlock the inside door. The second thing was a tête-à-tête. This was a chair designed with a seat facing each way, so two people could sit facing each other to talk. But most impressive of all was the Murphy bed. This was a pull-down bed in a closet, and I thought it was wonderful, because I got to sleep on it. I learned you didn't jump around on it much or it would fold right up."
