Notes

Helen Elizabeth (Suiter) McGuire, of Chapel Hill, NC, died on Sunday, May 7, 2017, at UNC Hospitals; she was 94. The youngest daughter of Captain John F. And Mrs. Olive P. (Carter) Suiter, she was born and raised in Princeton, Iowa. Helen was a 1943 graduate of the University of Iowa School of Pharmacy. Upon graduation, in the midst of World War II, she joined the U.S. Naval Reserve (Women's Reserve), better known as the WAVES, and attained the rank of Lieutenant, USNR. Following the war, while serving in Washington, DC, she met and married the late Cmdr. Walter J. McGuire, Jr. During their marriage, they lived in several locales, which included many Navy duty stations, and after Walt's retirement from the Navy, Spring Lake, Michigan, and Wichita, Kansas. Following Walt's death, Helen turned back to Pharmacy and became a licensed pharmacist, working for the next ten-plus years. In 1984, she moved to Chapel Hill to be close to her grandchildren, and lived there until her death. A beautiful soul, Helen loved flowers, birds, big band music, UNC basketball and her family. She was an accomplished gardener, cook, and seamstress, and could just as easily surprise you by painting a picture or playing the piano. To those who knew her best, she was an inspiration.

She is survived by daughters, Catherine McGuire of Washington, D.C. and Patricia (Richard) Hatfield of Carrboro, NC; son, W. John (Connie) McGuire of Washington, D.C.; grandchildren, Jason (Michael) Hatfield, Jessica (Clint) McClanahan, Nicholas McGuire, Quinn McGuire; great grandchildren Ewan, Sara, and Caroline McClanahan.

Private services will be held in Washington, D.C. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Women In Military Service For America Memorial or the University of Iowa.
